Sendgrid Removes Free Tier

Sendgrid ending free email API and free marketing campaigns

May 28, 2025

Sendgrid recently announced that their free tier will be ending this summer,  which can be a concern for many small businesses whose websites rely on this tier to send outgoing emails. If your account is on the free tier, you may have already been transitioned to the 60 day free trial after which will require a paid account in order to continue sending emails from your website. If you are unsure if your website is using Sendgrid, Simplistics can help confirm and determine next steps to maintain your service.

There are a few options to consider in order to ensure emails continue to work on your WordPress website if you are currently using the Sengrid Free Email API on your website.

Keeping your WordPress Emails With Sendgrid

If you wish to continue using Sendgrid to send emails, you can do so by logging into your Sendgrid account and following the steps to upgrade your plan to a paid tier.  Packages start at $19.95USD per month. If your site has been using the free tier, then you should be well set with the lowest cost plan

Once your account has been upgraded, no changes will need to be done on your website and emails will continue to work.

Switch to Server Mail

Your hosting provider may provide an option to send emails through their server, but this is usually less reliable than a verified service like Sendgrid and your emails are more likely to end up in the recipient’s spam folder. You can try disabling the SMTP plugin used to connect to Sendgrid (most commonly Easy WP SMTP, FluentSMTP, or Gravity SMTP) on your WordPress website to see if emails are still working without Sendgrid, however it may be best to discuss this option with your web host before making any changes.

Switch to Postmark

Postmark for WordPress is a great alternative to Sendgrid that still offers a free tier that will give you up to 100 emails a month. This aligns with the sending limits on your current Sendgrid Free Email API tier, but it’s important to note that it is not a good option for high volumes or emails or if you expect growth in the near future. To get started, you would need to create a new Postmark account, validate the required domain records, and reconfigure your WordPress mailing plugin.

If you need to send more emails than the free tier allows, Postmark’s paid plans start at $15USD per month and increases your limit to 10,000 emails/month.
